Job Description

The City of Sioux Center, a dynamic and thriving community, is seeking to hire a full-time School Resource Officer to serve our growing city.

This officer will be a visible role model specifically for the Sioux Center Christian School and will maintain a positive presence.
This officer will work in the school during regular school hours handling all complaints on campus and also have the ability to counsel students.
The SRO will use a multi-faceted law enforcement approach while fulfilling additional roles such as teacher, counselor and mentor. Additionally, this position provides an opportunity for them to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents while enforcing laws to promote a safe learning environment.
When school is not in session, the SRO will assist with patrol duties as well as Code Enforcement for the Sioux Center Police Department.

Job Requirements

Primary:

  • Patrol school property and school zones during school hours and have a presence before and after school.
  • Will update School Administration on safety trends and security issues in the schools.
  • Will check interior and exterior doors routinely to ensure they are in proper working condition and shall report any safety issues to School Administration.
  • Will monitor lunchrooms and hall activity during busy times and remain visible when students come into the school each morning
  • Must make routine walkthroughs in all schools.
  • Coordinate security for major school events, games, concerts, etc.
  • Enforce law infractions, disorder, and truancy issues
  • Handle complaints that occur on school property and handle those reports and investigations. Traffic complaints, school bus violations, accidents, etc.
  • Lead instruction and safety programs in the school. Ex; Bicycle safety, drug awareness, texting and distracted driving, social media and internet safety, Drivers Education, drug and alcohol effects, and bullying.
  • Primary liaison between school and police department

Secondary:

  • Provide updates to School Administration of safety trends and security issues
  • Routinely check interior and exterior doors to ensure they are in proper working order
  • Provide guidance for students
  • Fill patrol shifts within the City of Sioux Center

Education Requirements

Ability to read, comprehend and perform police duties as determined by state statute, working ability to reason
and react quickly and calmly in emergencies, deal with public/students equitably and courteously, knowledgeable
and skilled in use of a firearm, above average ability to drive a motor vehicle, ability to observe fact situations
analytically and objectively and to record them clearly and completely. Able to deal calmly with the
public/students in stressful situations. Working knowledge of all equipment used by the department. Ability to
quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
Ability to push and pull greater than 50 pounds. Ability to lift and carry 21-50 pounds. Above average mobility,
excellent health, must be able to pass a physical ability test. Vision must be at least 20/100 correctable to 20/20.
Vision can not be inhibited by color blindness or night blindness.

  • Years of Experience:  Must be able to complete Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Education: Completion of a high school level education or possession of a G.E.D. Certificate. Prefer completion of a post high school 2-year Law Enforcement Program.
  • Additional Information: Officer must be able to obtain a State of Iowa driver’s license and must be a citizen of the United States. Be of good moral character with no felony convictions.
