Job Description

Covenant Day School seeks a new middle and high school visual arts teacher who inspires students and works collaboratively and creatively with colleagues in various curricular areas and divisions to further the school’s mission. This role will have a focus on classical art, painting, drawing and graphic design that can be used in art classes as well as serving as the school yearbook advisor (high school). Candidates should be passionate about teaching and have a love for the arts as well as middle and high school students.  Reporting to the Fine Arts Director, the full-time salaried (exempt) position will serve during the ten-month academic year beginning in August, 2025.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Plan lessons on art and art history in accordance with students’ learning objectives.
  • Keep the classroom organized including common areas, storage areas and controlled use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in 2D and 3D art, including but not limited to drawing, painting, ceramics, and graphic design.
  • Serve as yearbook advisor, teaching a high school course to manage students in the creation of and process for the annual campus yearbook.
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations along with the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Assign and grade projects and examinations.
  • Record and report students’ progress and communicate effectively to parents.
  • Monitor inventory and source art supplies, as needed.
  • Attend faculty and parent-teacher meetings
  • Collaborate and integrate with faculty across disciplines to build meaningful curricular connections
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Fine Arts Director or Head of School
  • Invest in the life of the school by participating in the weekly department meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings, and any and all aspects that support the student experience
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Fine Arts Director or building principal.

Qualifications

  • Committed follower of Jesus Christ reflecting a desire to serve Him and others in work and life.
  • Bachelor’s degree in fine arts along with teaching qualifications or equivalent. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Prior experience as an art teacher; education and experience in graphic design.
  • Eager to serve in a Christian learning environment, modeling diligence, perseverance, resilience, patience, courage and Christian discipleship.
  • An understanding of teaching with biblical worldview and integration.
  • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of art techniques; capacity to supervise group work.
  • Available to work during evenings, on occasion
  • Willingness to collaborate with other faculty on cross-curricular endeavors and projects
  • Positive attitude and a genuine love for and ability to connect with middle school students
  • Passion for learning, strong classroom management skills, and a willingness to work collaboratively
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, and faculty/staff
  • Able to represent the school well to others and our community
  • Experience with distance learning and related techniques beneficial for environment shifts as needed
  • Computer skills as applicable for effective teaching in person or remotely, if needed
  • Able to work with others in all areas of education including assessment, planning and collaboration
  • Able to exercise discretion and utmost professionalism in confidential & sensitive student/family matte
  • Mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Requires mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small object
  • Able to stand for long periods and to walk outside and upstairs between buildings and classroom
  • Lifting, pushing and/or pulling up to 40 pounds when occasionally needed.
