Job Description

Advance a vision for inclusive education.

  • In collaboration with the Education Support Services team, provide hands-on academic support and intervention for students as needed.
  • To come alongside the classroom teacher to support those students with needs which cannot be met  through differentiation within the classroom. This may include but is not limited to the following:
    • Collaborating with the classroom teacher to support the academic and social emotional needs of students 
      • Strategizing interventions based on student needs
      • Pushing in for strategic instructional grouping
      • Pulling out those students needing intervention
    • Advising on accommodations and modifications for students as appropriate

Student Support:

    • Coordinate the intake process with Administration for incoming students with identified needs.
    • Identify and provide support for students with learning and behavioral differences.
    • Provide support and guidance for teachers working with those students.
    • Write and develop Student Support Plans (SSP) for those students with identified needs and set student goals and consistently monitor progress.
    • Lead the Student Support Team (SST) meetings, clearly communicating the goals and progress with teachers and parents.
    • Create lessons that will help students make progress and meet their goals.
    • Be familiar with and provide recommendations for various intervention and assessment tools that support and monitor student progress.
    • Observe teaching staff to monitor effectiveness of accommodations and interventions.
    • Evaluate regularly (at least each Trimester) meeting with the SST and families to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. 
    • Advocate for students at BCS.
  • Other Tasks:
    • Advise the Administrator on staffing, future goals, and needs of the program.
    • Collaborate and coordinate with the local public school district, outside consultants, and specialists.
    • Maintain and update policy and procedures in the Student Support Services Handbook.
  • Gather, review, and interpret student assessment data. Administer benchmark tests and interpret assessment data to determine student needs. Assist teachers in interpreting data.

Job Requirements

In instructional planning:

  • Hold the school’s mission before you as the “big picture” of what you are attempting to accomplish.
  • Translate the school’s student outcomes into specific objectives or essential questions for lessons suitable to the age level and development needs of your students.
  • Select and use curricular materials that will help students achieve these outcomes.
  • Collaborate with teachers to plan teaching-learning experiences that help each student achieve the stated objectives.
  • Plan lessons that connect biblical principles to concepts about God’s world.
  • Plan a variety of teaching strategies to match the learning styles of the students.
  • Select in advance the means of assessment to measure students’ learning for a lesson or unit.

In teaching:

  • Use time well with activities that engage student’s attention and have a clear purpose.
  • Give clear directions and well-organized examples and explanations.
  • Articulate a biblical worldview that is woven into instruction.
  • Listen carefully to students’ ideas and apply them to the lesson.
  • Use questions and explanations that promote clear thinking and awe in students.
  • Show interest and wonder in all learning through gestures, body movement, and voice inflection.
  • Compose useful analogies to connect what students are learning to what they have already learned.

In relating with students:

  • Establish a climate of love and care.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students in school and in the broader community.
  • Define responsible Christian behavior for students, including guidelines and consequences for good and bad behavior in school.
  • Help students learn self-discipline through appropriate guiding and correcting.
  • Provide organized learning that helps students support and learn from each other.

In professional growth:

  • Have a growth mindset and be a lifelong learner. Take responsibility for your own professional growth. by remaining current in scholarship on teaching, the purposes of Christian education, and your subject area (Learning Support Services)
  • Demonstrate an ability and desire to collaborate with colleagues and administration by contributing ideas and listening to the ideas of others.
  • Accept your share of responsibilities for the Christian education of the students and the operation of the school.

Education Requirements

  • BA or MA (preferred) in the field of Special Education. 
  • Candidates with education training, certification, or experience in working with students with learning differences are preferred.
  • Experience with various benchmarking, intervention/support, and curricular tools (i.e. AimsWeb, STAR, MAP, Orton Gillingham, Fountas and Pinnell, Visualization and Verbalization, Self-Regulated Strategy Development, Reading and Writing Units of Study, etc.) is preferred but not required. 
  • Experience working with and leading a team is desired.
  • A valid teaching certificate is preferred but not required.  If not in possession of a current teaching certificate, the teacher must be willing to work toward obtaining a valid WI teaching license.
