GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION

The Assistant Principal is an important part of the administrative team and is responsible for supporting the educational environment and culture at Highland Christian. In this role, the assistant principal helps coordinate professional development, supports improved instructional practices, leads team meetings, and promotes the PLC process throughout the building. A successful hire will help inspire, lead, and direct educational programs to improve student outputs and support professional growth. 

The Assistant Principal reports to and takes direction from the Head of School and Academic Principal, and must act in accordance with the HCS Constitution and with the policies established by the Board. 


Job Requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS OF THE ADMINISTRATOR

Education: Possess a masters in education or a related field, or is willing to complete appropriate coursework.

Experience: Possess experience or a high capacity to manage and lead others. 

Certification: Possess or willing to obtain appropriate certification as an administrator.

Faith: A successful candidate must have and profess a personal and mature commitment to faith in Jesus Christ and affirm the school’s statement of faith/basis of instruction and mission statement. Membership at a Bible-believing Protestant Church is a requirement of the position. A majority of staff must be members at a Reformed Church.

The Assistant Principal must believe, without reservation, and actively support the school’s statement of faith/basis of instruction and mission statement; possess a strong, clear Christian testimony; demonstrate a mature, godly spirit as a person of faith and prayer.

The school Administrator must:

  • Understand the importance of discernment, discretion, and confidentiality in the operation of the school; 
  • Remain approachable - interact easily and effectively with staff/constituents and community entities while demonstrating sensitivity to their concerns/needs;

The school Administrator must:

  • Be able to articulate a Christian philosophy of education consistent with Scripture and the HCS statement of faith/basis of instruction and mission statement;
  • Be able to explain to potential students and their parents the reasons why Christian education should be chosen; 
  • Have broad successful experience as a leader, manager, and administrator; 
  • Demonstrate executive and management skills and demeanor; 
  • Display effective oral and written communications; 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to gender and ethnic/national origin diversity at all levels in the workplace and within the student body, and further demonstrate cultural sensitivity and competency in dealing with a diverse group;
  • Be open to new ideas, initiatives, and concepts in education, and be committed to professional development and training;
  • Stay abreast of leadership, educational, and management trends and innovations via regular professional development, research, professional journals, and networking

The school Administrator must:

The school Administrator must:

  • Supervise and evaluate staff alongside the Principal and support difficult decisions and clearly and effectively communicate difficult messages

RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative - Partnering with Instructional Staff

  • Serve as the JRH Department Head by preparing bi-weekly agendas; planning and running special events; and preparing JRH schedules. Department heads also meet bi-weekly for meetings with the Administration team.
  • Promote improvement of staff by encouraging and providing professional growth opportunities for the faculty both on and off campus. 
  • Ensure that the curriculum and instruction in the building reflects the priorities of the Head of School and Board. This includes attending PLC meetings, to promote high levels of student success. 
  • Evaluate instructional staff according to school policy.
  • Lead and plan instructional professional development that aligns with the school’s mission and strategic goals. This includes new teacher inservice, the PLC Institute, August professional development, Late Starts, and other professional development.
  • Collaborate with Student Services (Counselor, Student Support Specialist, Title I, and Discovery Center) to support student needs.
  • Serves a KTEA test proctor for new admission students entering grades 1-8. 
  • Manage all state and local testing (WIDA, IREAD3, ILEARN, NWEA MAPs) requirements, training, scheduling, and reporting for teachers and students. Collaboratively working alongside the Director of Student Services, Data Specialist and teachers to ensure smooth testing sessions. 
  • Attend and participate in bi-weekly Student Services meetings and collaboratively work alongside the Director of Student Services. 
  • Attend and participate in monthly School Improvement Team meetings.
  • Administer rules and procedures promptly, fairly, and consistently.

Students and Parents

  • Support students throughout the school day with academic needs and activities as they arise. 
  • Address parents concerns relating to academics and state/local student testing. 
  • Proactively provide communication to families about upcoming student testing. 

Board

  • Attend an annual Board meeting as the JRH Department Head representative. 

Other Duties as Assigned

  • It is recognized that changing facts and circumstances impacting the school may supersede any position description, regardless of how complete. As such, in the intervening time between updates to position descriptions and any accompanying performance plans, the Assistant Principal shall perform all other duties as assigned by the Lead Administrator.
  • Other teaching responsibilities may be assigned

ACCOUNTABILITY
The Assistant Principal is directly responsible and accountable to the Head of School and shall be evaluated annually according to established criteria, including the imposition of annual performance goals and objectives that include reference to appropriate metrics and/or key performance indicators of success, as established in an annual performance plan. The Administrator serves at the pleasure of the Board.
